Plant growth regulators (PGRs) are chemical substances that influence the growth and development of plants in very small amounts. They play a vital role in agriculture, horticulture, and forestry by shaping plant size, flowering, fruiting, and even stress resistance. Unlike conventional fertilizers, which supply nutrients, PGRs work by altering physiological processes within plants.

PGRs are broadly divided into two categories: natural and synthetic. Natural plant hormones—such as auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins, ethylene, and abscisic acid—are produced within plant tissues. Synthetic regulators mimic or inhibit these natural hormones to achieve desired agricultural outcomes. For example, auxins can promote root formation in cuttings, gibberellins can stimulate seed germination, and cytokinins can delay leaf senescence to extend the shelf life of leafy vegetables.

In modern agriculture, PGRs are applied to enhance crop yield, improve quality, and synchronize fruit ripening for easier harvesting. They are also valuable in managing plant architecture, allowing crops to be shorter and sturdier to withstand wind and rain. Additionally, they can help plants adapt to challenging environmental conditions, such as drought or salinity.

However, their use requires careful regulation. Excessive or improper application can harm plants, reduce yields, or pose environmental risks. As such, farmers and researchers must follow precise guidelines to ensure that PGR use remains safe and sustainable.

With growing global food demands, plant growth regulators are expected to become even more important. Through responsible use and continued innovation, they can serve as powerful tools in achieving agricultural productivity while protecting the environment.
